The lee surname originated from worshipping the totem of the plum tree（lee-zi in Chinese). The ancestors of the Lees first had the surname 理(li) due to their to their role as an officer of the DaLi temple . The Lees only began their worshiping of the plum totem after one of their ancestors survived on plums during a harsh period. It is common to find Lees planting plum trees in their yards.

Most of the early 李 immigrants are young men from many different parts of hokkien and Canton. They travelled through Macao and Hong Kong, encountering much difficulties before reaching Singapore as "Workers" or "Pigtails".
